The Umbwe Route guarantees an epic thrilling adventure. It is perhaps the most challenging Kilimanjaro Route. Though it’s a steep uphill climb, the Umbwe route promises some breathtaking views of the ridges. After the first two days, the hiking trails eventually join with the Machame Route and Lemosho Route, and carry on up the Great Barranco Wall to Karanga Valley and Barafu Camp and finally the summit point of Uhuru Peak.

Why Choose Umbwe Route For Your Kilimanjaro Climbing Expedition?

The Umbwe Route is the shortest and steepest route to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the most direct route on the mountain, it ascends steeply through the forest up to Barranco Camp on the south side. Therefore, it would be the hardest to adapt to in terms of acclimatisation. That’s probably the reason only 589 people trek via the Umbwe route each year. As this route approaches from the south, camping is the only available accommodation option. If you’re choosing this route then we recommend you to pre-acclimatize properly.

The Kilimanjaro National Park designated this route to be a descent route some years ago. It offers an easier and quicker descent profile. Nowadays, it’s commonly used by porters to deliver food supplies up to Barranco Camp. Moreover, it can be a quiet retreat for people who are sick at either Barranco or Karanga Camp.

Days

It is the shortest Kilimanjaro Climbing Route. You can Climb Kilimanjaro via the Umbwe route within 5 days. But Kilimanjaro Treks strongly recommends a six-day itinerary because the extra time is helpful to your acclimatisation. Remember, climbing Kilimanjaro isn’t a race – take your time, enjoy the views, and, most importantly, pole pole!

Pros And Cons Of The Umbwe Route
Given its steep ascent, the Umbwe route doesn’t offer much time to acclimatise and so has a low summit success rate.
