Tanzania Highlights

Parks & Wildlife

Tanzania’s unsurpassed array of parks and reserves is one of its biggest drawcards. Crowning the collection is the magnificent Serengeti National Park where million-strong beards of wildebeest trammel the seemingly endless plains. Nearby, the steeply sloping sides of Ngorongoro Crater serve as a backdrop for the ever-changing drama of one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

Ruaha National Park with its sublime riverine setting is worth as much time as you can give it, as are the vast, baobab-studded expanses of the Selous Game Reserve. Katavi National Park is as unspoiled as it gets, rivalled only by remote Mahale Mountains National Park, one of the best places on the continent for tracking chimps.

Island & Beaches

Turquoise tides, silver-white sands and intriguing island bring Tanzania’s coastline just one step away from paradise. Laze away by day on Zanzibar’s beaches, and explore exotic Stone Town by night, swim among shoals of colourful fish around  tiny Misali, offshore from Pemba, relax amidst the ruins at Bagamoyo or Kilwa Masoko, or enjoy the ultimate tropical gateway at the beaches south of Pangani, or on Mafia. Treat yourself to a bit of surf and safari together at Saadani National Park, or head inland for off-beat explorations around the placid Lake Nyasa shoreline.

Cultural Kaleidoscope

Colourful cultures abound in Tanzania, and exploring their diversity is one of the highlights of travel here. Let the monsoon winds carry you back through the centuries on Zanzibar; walk with the Maasai amidst the rugged landscapes of the Crater Highlands; watch skilled Makonde carvers at work at Dar es Salaam’s Mwenge market; or live like a Chagga for the day near Marangu. Immerse yourself in fascinating Pare culture around Same; learn about the hunting and gathering traditions of the ancient Hadzabe near Lake Eyasi; step back into Haya history around Bukoba; beat out pulsating Sukuma drumming rhythms near Mwanza and spend time with the Sambaa in the western Usambaras Mountains.
