Tour Overview

TAZARA runs three types of passenger trains, i.e. Express, Ordinary and Special Trains. Apart from conveying people, passenger trains also transport parcels and luggage using the parcel vans attached to the passenger trains.

Express Trains

We operate one express passenger train, the Mukuba Express Train, every Tuesday from New Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam and every Friday from Dar es Salaam to New Kapiri-Mposhi, departing from New Kapiri-Mposhi and Dar es Salaam at 16:00 CAT and 15:50 EAT, respectively. The Mukuba is named after Zambia’s top mineral export, copper, for which the country remains one of the top producers in the world. It takes approximately 46 hours to travel between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi.

Passengers have the rare treat of viewing a variety of games along the way. When passing through the tunnels, crossing rivers and gorges, passengers have a chance to appreciate the awesome and inspirational engineering works of the Chinese, who constructed the rail line between 1970 and 1975.

Ordinary Trains

The Ordinary Passenger Train, on the other hand, runs in the opposite direction of the Express every Tuesday and Friday, departing Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri-Mposhi at 13:50 EAT and 14:00 CAT, on Tuesday and Friday, respectively. The ordinary train stops at every serviceable railway station in the respective regions of Tanzania and Zambia.

Day 1: Dar Es Salaam to Selous by Train

Depart from TAZARA station, Dar es Salaam to Kisaki, Selous.Trains depart Tuesday 13.50 or Friday 15:50 and the journey takes about 4 hours passing through rural villages and Selous Game Reserve. Overnight at Sable Mountain Lodge.

Day 2: Full day game drive and boat safari on Lake Tagalala

After your first night in Selous, awake early to a dawn chorus and spectacular views from your room (“cottage”). After a quick cup of tea or coffee, head into the reserve as dawn breaks for a full day game drive and a thrilling boat safari on Lake Tagalala.

There is nothing quite like sitting with your packed breakfast amongst the huge hippo pods, crocs and amazing birdlife on the lake. Return to the lodge for dinner and relax by the pool or visit the lodge’s tree house & water hole for the remainder of the day, the choice is yours (Packed breakfast, L, D) Overnight Sable Mountain Lodge

Day 3: Full day game drive in Selous

After breakfast, another full day game drive in a specially modified safari vehicle with a professional guide, in which you should see and learn much about a large number of animals, including all the great favourites – lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra – and all the other major species including the now rare African hunting dog. Great variety of bird species. Wonderful scenery, with varied topography: wetlands, dry grassland, light acacia forest and higher ground with long views to far-off mountains.

Packed lunch and time to rest. Your guide will select a location with shade and water nearby to watch animals coming to drink – a place with a clear view all round so that no predator can creep up unseen! Back to the lodge by 6.30 for sunset and dinner when you’re ready. Overnight Sable Mountain Lodge

Day 4: Drive to Dar Es Salaam

This morning, awake again before dawn and leave the lodge this time on foot to explore the surrounding area and the smaller flora and fauna often missed on a game drive. Enjoy a tree house visit en route back to the lodge to check if anything is drinking at the waterhole.

Return to camp for a late breakfast before relaxing around the lodge or at the spring water swimming pool. After lunch, visit a local Masai village. Afterwards transfer to DAR ES SALAAM by VEHICLE (optional fly to Dar Es Salaam or Zanzibar)
